Meet Our Staff

G. Kim Sutterfield, Ph.D., MFT

Dr. Sutterfield became licensed to practice psychotherapy in 1982 as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. He has earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, a M.Ed. in Counseling and Administration and a B.S in Social Work. Dr. Sutterfield has held clinical positions in Utah, Massachusetts, California and Germany. He completed different degrees in three separate States in diverse parts of the United States. He has considerable experience working with people from various cultures and backgrounds and strives to support diversity, advocacy and tolerance in his life and practice.

Dr Sutterfield has extensive experience providing assessment, treatment and consultation with children, adolescents, families and adults. Dr. Sutterfield provides psychotherapy with couples, children of divorce, and children with school and behavior problems, blended families, and foster parents of abused children. His clinical practice also includes adults experiencing personal or relationship problems. Dr. Sutterfield worked as a civilian employee for a drug and alcohol treatment program for the U.S. Army in Germany. Dr. Sutterfield also treats individuals who are dealing with chemical dependency and those struggling with dual diagnosis issues. He also specializes in the evaluation and treatment of sex offenders, abuse reactive children, and survivors of sexual abuse.

Dr. Sutterfield spent over 15 years in leadership positions in both clinical and administrative roles for community based counseling agencies in the San Francisco bay area. He has maintained a small private practice providing consultation, clinical assessment and treatment for over 20 years throughout the greater Bay Area and Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley. He has provided clinical services for San Francisco City and County, San Mateo, Marin County, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, San Joaquin, and Sacramento Counties as an approved provider of mental health services. He has been involved in forensic mental health settings for several years and provides consultation, clinical assessment and treatment for adolescents in correctional and residential settings. He is one of the founding members of Pacific Counseling Associates of Stockton, California, which was established in 2005.

Dr. Sutterfield enjoys providing training and clinical supervision for educational and clinically focused institutions.. He had previously been part of a research team at University of California at San Francisco, studying treatment outcomes with chemically dependent adolescents and their families. Dr. Sutterfield currently works part time as a core adjunct faculty for graduate classes in psychology at National University.


Derek Washington , Ph.D., MFT

Dr. Washington is a licensed marriage and family therapist.  He is a native of Miami, Florida and moved to California in 1968 as a Captain in the U. S. Air Force. After leaving military service in 1970, he accepted a position as a staff clinical psychologist with Sacramento County Mental Health services. Dr. Washington received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of California in 1982 and continued his private practice afterwards. In 1988, he went to work for the California Department of Corrections as a staff clinical psychologist at the California Medical Facility, Vacaville, California, and was instrumental in the formation of the Department of Psychology and served as the first elected chairperson.

Dr. Washington affected a transfer to the California Youth Authority in 1990 and accepted a position as a staff clinical psychologist at the Preston School of Industry, in Ione, (Amador County) California. He continued to maintain his private practice while working at Preston, served on numerous committees, and was instrumental in the formation of the Department of Psychology at Preston. In 2006, Dr. Washington transferred to the State Department of Education, Special Education Division, where he serves as an Education Consultant.

As one of the founders of Pacific Counseling Associates in Stockton, Dr. Washington continues to provide individual and group psychotherapy, family therapy, and works with both adults and adolescents. He employs a growth-oriented model of treatment and counseling and is also available as a consultant to organizations.

In his other life, Dr. Washington is a professional musician, plays saxophones, and is a singer as well. He has been a radio broadcaster since 1988 in Stockton at KUOP-FM and Sacramento at KXJZ-FM, and Nevada City, California.


Roseline Cruz-Rine, MA, MFT-I

MA graduate of National University, Ms. Cruz-Rine began to practice at Pacific Counseling Associates in 2005. Rosaline provides services to adults, couples, children and adolescents. Prior to starting a practice with PCA, she was employed at a local hospital providing services to patients within the psychiatric department. Ms. Cruz-Rine utilizes Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in the treatment of many of her clients. Rosaline has a special interest working with people who have religious and spiritual issues that they would like to explore. Ms.Cruz-Rine also enjoys working with families and helping them negotiate difficult times inherent in the family life cycle. She has been married for 24 years and is a mother of seven children, ranging from the ages of 22 to 9 years of age.

Yvonne Gordon, MA, MFT-I

Yvonne earned a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from National University and is currently a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern. Her background includes working with diverse cultures and is sensitive to needs specific to various ethnic groups. Her experience includes working with preschool children and their families, along with counseling elementary age students in school settings. Yvonne has experience working with adults and adolescents, in group and individual therapy, in outpatient and forensic settings. She is also bicultural and is fluent in English and Spanish.

Renae Olivas, BA, MFT Trainee and Office Manager

Ms. Olivas earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz with a focus on children development. She is currently working towards a Master’s of Degree in Counseling with an emphasis on marriage, family, and child therapy. Renae’s previous work experience has been in medical billing, medical customer service, and child education. She is currently co-facilitating group therapy and managing the office at Pacific Counseling Associates. Ms. Olivas is working towards becoming a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
